This text, which is possibly President Lech
Kaczyński’s last press statement, was written as an opening piece for a special
Tygodnik Powszechnysupplement marking the 70th anniversary of the Katyń massacre.
“ It is only now that we fully comprehend the extent of the losses Poland
suffered”, he wrote.
Few people are interested in the real Lech Wałęsa.He’s the grey old man who occasionally holds
forth on ‘big ideas’ which we let in through one ear and out
through the other, even if we’re fond of the man himself. We think it doesn’t
matter who he is today, all that matters is that he is a living legend, says
novelist Stefan Chwin.
